AVATAR FILM REVIEW (2 Hrs 41 Mins) M - Director James Cameron
Exciting, visually stunning - a story with great heart and integrity.
Main Cast - Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Long, Michelle Rodriguez.
Avatar is the story of wheelchair bound, former Marine who finds himself thrust into hostilities on an alien planet filled with exotic life forms. As an Avatar, a human mind in an alien body, he finds himself torn between two worlds, in a desperate fight for his own survival and that of the indigenous people.
The most expensive film made to date with a $400 million budget, this film employs state of the art film technology (from WETA – Lord of the Rings fame) to create amazing CGI aliens and planetary environment, that truly needs to be seen in 3D on the big screen, to really appreciate the incredible cinematic achievement that is AVATAR.
Many people will probably avoid this film because of the hype and there are many others who will go, despite abhorring sci-fi, because of it. I would definitely not recommend this film to those who hate sci-fi, but for the rest of us, see this film with an open mind and heart. It is immensely beautiful in its depiction. Pandora’s floating mountains are reminiscent of the famous painting by Belguim Surrealist Painter René Magritte “Castle in the Pyrenees” – a huge floating rock with a castle on top. While watching AVATAR, I felt I had been privy to walking through someone’s vibrant imagination and enjoyed the privilege from beginning to end. Although, the natives of Pandora bore remarkable similarities to the Native Americans and other familiar indigenous peoples, it is obvious that James Cameron’s story that takes place on the planet of “Pandora” is an analogy for what we, on planet Earth, are doing to our world - its natural places and the disappearing traditional way of life that was lived in harmony with nature. The only thing in this film that grated with me, and it was only a very small one, was the name of the invaluable mineral being the reason for the decimation of Pandora and the Na'vi – "unobtainium"! Even “elusivite” would have been an improvement.
James Cameron’s stories always feature a strong woman character at its heart, such as Sigourney Weaver’s – Ripley in "Aliens", Sarah Connor in "Terminator", Rose in "Titanic" and in "Avatar" we have an impressive and graceful alien native woman Neytiri (Zoe Saldana). But the main character of "Avatar" is marine veteran Jake Sully played by talented Aussie actor Sam Worthington. He certainly gives his character a depth, sensitivity and strength, even as the blue CGI avatar. However all the actors do a phenomenal job in their roles, whether human or alien. Loved seeing Sigourney Weaver in this epic film, and Michelle Rodriguez’s performance as the courageous and honourable pilot is strong and believable.
All in all - the characters of AVATAR were beautifully created and acted, the visuals faultless and I’m booking the next flight to Pandora!
